'Santa' Kills 3 in Christmas Rampage, Takes Own Life

COVINA -- Three people were killed, and three others were wounded, when a man dressed as Santa Claus opened fire at a Christmas Eve party, then set the house on fire before fleeing the scene.

It happened about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 11-hundred block of E. Knollcrest Drive.

Police say the primary suspect, 45-year-old Bruce Jeffrey Pardo, took his life Thursday morning at a relative's home in Sylmar.

Pardo reportedly was going through marital problems and it's believed that his "ex" or members of her family may have been at the party.

Lt. Pat Buchanan with Covina police described the scene as "extremely unusual and very shocking." He added, "It's just not something we see here at any time of the year, especially during Christmas."

Witnesses told police that the man took off the Santa suit and left the scene in street clothes.

Lt. Buchanan said people at the party gave police Pardo's name, but they had not seen him directly. He said police had yet to interview any family members from the home, and did not yet know how many people were at the party.
